I happened to find some amazing photos of this place on Facebook from John Harrow, Michaela Galbraith, Steven Gauld, and Isaac Livermore. I have included those here along with some street views. The long, 17 room wing right on the loop was operating as part of the Hospitality House but in an earlier life it was the Au Sable Motel.
This was confirmed by the Genealogy Trails web site thus: "The site of the first Grayling Mercy Hospital was North McClellan Street in Grayling. The AuSable Motel, across the street from St. Mary’s Catholic Church, now occupies the ground where the first hospital stood. It was a 30-bed facility which, according to Rasmus Hanson, a local lumberman and principal donor in the project, was to stand as a monument erected by the lumbermen of northern Michigan 'to relieve the physical evils and suffering of humanity,' as reported in the first Mercy Hospital annual report."
The long wing was indeed across the street from the church even though it is now gone. That was once the Au Sable Motel.
Update 12-20-2022:
I had a feeling the Hospitality House was not the original name of this place which clearly goes back to the 50's or 60's. As it turns out, this was Marshall's Motel (or Marshall Motel) in an earlier incarnation. This was mentioned by members of the Grayling Facebook Group and I was initially skeptical. After comparing the old Marshall postcards to the 2018 street views of Hospitality House, the layout of the building and such checked out. I can also add to the roster of owners in no particular order: Melvin and Elna Marshall (probably the originators), The Sauters, Bill and Katy Brady.
